The National Honor Society recognizes students (with a GPA of 3.6 or higher) who have submitted applications and have exemplified other NHS qualifications of service, leadership, and character. Juniors and seniors who qualify academically and fulfill all NHS requirements are permitted to enter the application process in October. Students who are accepted into the IWA chapter are inducted into the National Honor Society at a special ceremony in December.

NHS General Guidelines:
NHS is more than just an honor roll. The Honor Society chapter establishes rules for membership that are based upon a student's outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character for high school. These criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built.
Incarnate Word Academy local school chapter guidelines:
Scholarship: membership is opened to juniors and seniors, who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.6 (on a 4.0 scale) based on the previous semester GPA as set by the local school's Faculty Council, meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character. Meeting the academic guideline is not a guarantee for acceptance since other guidelines play also an important part in the selection process.
Service: This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit. The student must be current on her IWA service learning hours in order to be eligible for consideration. That is, the student has accumulated 25 hours per school year as shown by records in the service learning coordinator office. For example, a junior student must begin with at least 50 service learning hours.
Leadership : Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others. This leadership quality must be evident in the daily life of the student while at the academy as well as outside of school life.
Character: The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle. The student must have a good conduct record during the time she has been at the academy as well as in any other activity that she is involved outside of the school, in addition she must have no more than 5 unexcused absences or tardies per semester.
Other Requirements:
At the time of the request for membership students are required to attend a short orientation meeting and given the activity sheets and other pertinent forms which they are to fill out according to instructions and to turn in on the date required. Failure to attend the meeting or to complete and turn in the activity packet and other forms may disqualify the student from the process.
Once a school has established a chapter, all membership selection for individual students is handled through the local school chapter.
