Christmas Concert Showcases Songs of the Season
“This is an opportunity to showcase nearly all of our fine arts ensembles.” Incarnate Word Academy choir director Joshua Wilson is talking about the upcoming Christmas concert, scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 12 at St. Thomas High School’s Cemo Auditorium. The concert is a collaborative effort between the IWA choir, the IWA Impact Dance Team, the St. Thomas High School Singers, the St. Thomas Jazz Ensemble and the St. Thomas High School Band, which also has members from IWA. “By the end of the evening, we’ll have about 120 kids on stage.”
Wilson, who also leads the St. Thomas Singers, says this is the second year the two schools have combined for the performance, which features a selection of sacred music as well as popular holiday favorites. He likes that it gives the students at both schools a chance to sing together.
“It really allows us to sing a lot of music, not just the pieces of the repertoire that are only for female or male voices,” he says. “It gives us a big sound, especially when we have the band joining in.”
Wilson says audiences can look for familiar tunes like “Christmas Time is Here,” one of the signature songs from “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” and “Sleigh Ride.” But there are some selections people may be less familiar with that he says showcase the talent of the singers.
“We have a three-part setting of an old Latin Advent hymn,” he said. “And we have a really neat arrangement of a 16th century song, Gaudete, that both the men and women sing. It’s done with a drum, flute and trumpet. It’s beautiful.”
There is also, he said, a sing-along at the end of the concert, and the IWA Impact Dance Team will perform on some of the songs.
“This is a great way to celebrate all of our musicians and artists,” Wilson said. “I think it will get people into the holiday spirit.”
The Christmas Concert takes place at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12. Admission is free.
