Throughout June, IWA was thrilled to host DECATS: Exploration Awaits! on our campus. DECATS is a popular summer program for academically talented 4th- through 7th-graders that has thrived in Houston for 30 years. Originally launched in Catholic schools, the program now welcomes students who score in the top 5% in both public and private schools. IWA’s principal Cathy Stephen has worked with the program for 20 years. She served as the IWA DECATS Campus Principal, along with Program Director Dr. Tonya Dixon, a professional learning specialist in the Cypress-Fairbanks school district. (See photo below.) Dr. Dixon says the 180 Scholars, 30 Graduate Assistants, and Mentors were excited to explore IWA’s dynamic downtown location and modern amenities. Six IWA teachers also signed on to be Mentors: Dr. Tim Daponte, Mrs. Kathie Kelly, Ms. Maxine Morency, Ms. Anja Ozols, Dr. Cynthia Martinez and Ms. Brittany Revia, who taught at Strake Jesuit's campus.
