Senior Night celebrations can be bittersweet, a chance to showcase the accomplishments of the graduating class, but also one more milestone that marks the transition out of high school and into the future.
The Falcons Varsity Basketball Senior Night on Tuesday, Feb. 1 was much more sweet than bitter, as the team cruised to victory over Beaumont's Monsignor Kelly High School 62-33, improving their season record to 20-8.
Kati Rzasnicki '22 led the team in scoring, pulling in 18 points, giving her 881 varsity career points. Teammate Lauren Castex '22 finished the game with a career total of 870 points.
"I am so impressed with the team unity and the valor these girls have displayed this season," said varsity basketball coach Fernando Villasana.
Senior Night began with basketball team members Jorri Odom '23 and Amy Phan '23 introducing senior players Lauren Castex, Lily Cantu, Chimere Egesi, Persia Fombin, Olivia Mallett, Kati Rzasnicki and Mary Uyenco, and senior managers Nia Alexander and Lauren Richards. All were escorted onto the court by family members, pausing for photos under a red, white and black balloon arch. The students received baskets of flowers and other gifts.
The seniors are just as impressive off the court. Five of the seven seniors are members of the National Honor Society. All seven are heading to college after IWA. Two, Lauren Castex and Chimere Egesi, have received full tuition scholarships. Kati Rzasnicki has committed to playing basketball at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. Five are planning to major in STEM or premed fields in college. Two are founders or co-founders of clubs here at IWA.
"These students are involved of every aspect of life here at IWA," said Andrea Smith, M.Ed., LPC, NCC, IWA's principal. "They demonstrate commitment, leadership and school spirit. It's wonderful to have this chance to celebrate their athletic and academic achievements."
The Falcons hit the road this week with an away game versus St. Pius X on Friday, Feb. 4. Their final home game of the season is against The Village School on Tuesday, Feb. 8. For a complete schedule, click here.
