It was a game that will go down in Incarnate Word Academy history.
On Feb. 8, the varsity Falcons basketball team beat St. Agnes 43-42, in a game that went right to the buzzer. It's the first time in school history we've beat the Tigers.
Play had gone back and forth all night, with the Falcons up 41 - 39 with 13.3 seconds left in the game. St. Agnes took back the lead on a 3-pointer, making the score 42 - 41. The Falcons never let up. With seven seconds remaining, Anora Lee ‘22 made a layup, cinching the win.
The exciting finish had Falcons fans cheering.
"This team has so much heart!" said IWA Athletic Director Rick Perez. "We're so proud of them."
Perez compared the contest between the two schools to David and Goliath.
"For a school as small as we are to take on an opponent three times our size, and win, that's just a great feeling!" he said. "And it's a lesson for our girls: we have the confidence and the ability to win."
The team currently has a 17-9 record and finished third in our district. The girls go on to play the winner of Tuesday night's game between Incarnate Word Academy in San Antonio and St. Dominic Savio in Austin.
