IWA CHoir Director Part of Grammy-Winning Effort

In addition to leading the incredibly talented singers that are part of the Incarnate Word Academy Choir, Mr. Joshua Wilson, the choir director, is also an incredibly talented singer himself.

Want proof? He's part of the Houston Chamber Choir, which just won its very first Grammy Award for its recording of "Duruflé: The Complete Choral Works." The award was announced on Sunday, Jan. 26 as part of the non-televised portion of the annual Grammy Awards. Wilson has been a member of the group for nearly a dozen years.

"It's a really special thing," he said about the honor. "We knew this recording was special when we did it, and it would be something people would listen to and get satisfaction from. It's really beautiful, and it was a real labor of love."

The members of the Houston Chamber Choir are all volunteers, and must audition to be part of the ensemble. They perform numerous concerts across Houston throughout the year. They'll next sing at South Main Baptist Church on Feb. 22 and 23 in a world premiere concert of British composer Bob Chilcott's newly revised "Circlesong."

“Choral music is something people do because they love it,” said Robert Simpson, director of the Houston Chamber Choir, who admitted he was surprised and honored by the nomination. In his acceptance speech, he noted that Houston was "one of the real artistic capitals of our country. It is from this city that our musicians are drawn. They are friends and neighbors, and they are amazingly talented."

"Bob talked about the choral community in his speech," said Wilson. "And the kids who sing choir are part of that choral community, too. My whole life has been in choral music, and I want our students in the IWA choir to know they are part of this legacy of music."
