Late last month, nine of our IWA Choir members were selected to be part of prestigious all-region choirs. Today, four of those nine have been selected for the Texas Private Schools Music Educators Association (TPSMEA) All-State Choir. That's a school record.
Sofia Garza '21, Iman Haddad '23, Dominique Nanquil '20 and Katelyn Powell '20 will all sing in the All-State Choir Concert on Jan. 25, 2020 at the Eisemann Center for the Performing Arts in Richardson. This is second year that Sofia and Dominique have been selected for the honor; it's a first for Katelyn and Iman.
"It's wonderful to see these hard working young musicians being recognized in this way!" said IWA's choir director Joshua Wilson. "This is an incredible accomplishment."
Advancing to the All-State Choir is a tiered process. It begins with having individual choir members make two audition recordings, where they sing their voice part in a select portion of a choral piece. Selections come from the repertoire that will be featured in the all-state concert. Those auditions are judged by a five-member panel made up of choir directors and voice teachers. The top 16 students from each voice part — soprano 1 and 2, alto 1 and 2, tenor 1 and 2, and bass 1 and 2 — are selected to be part of various all-region choirs. Sofia, Iman, Doninique and Katelyn, along with fellow IWA Choir member Persia Fombin '22, were named to the All-Region Mixed Choir, which carries with it the honor of participating in the All-Region Clinic and Concert that will be held at St. Agnes Academy on Jan. 11, 2002. Students named to the All-Region Choir are also eligible to advance via audition to the All-State Competition.
"Entries come from private schools around the state," explained Wilson. "The competition is intense. To have a record-setting four students selected to All-State is outstanding. I am so proud of them!"
Sofia, Iman, Dominique and Katelyn are not the only IWA choir members with something to celebrate. Maria Bello '20, Elise Potier '22, Raven Reese '22 and Zoe Yokubaitis '23 were selected for the All-Region Treble Choir. All nine young women will be part of the clinic and concert at St. Agnes in January.
Next month, the IWA Choir will perform with St. Thomas High School's St. Thomas Singers at the annual Christmas concert. The performance takes place on the St. Thomas campus in Cemo Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. on Dec. 12
