Each year, volleyball draws the most participants for team tryouts, and this August was no different as 47 students participated in two days of tryouts, demonstrating their spikes, serves, and saves.
The program seizes momentum with a new lineup of coaches: Freshman Coach Joseph Schiller, JV Coach Audrey Phillips, and Varsity Coach Britni Villareal. All three are familiar faces to IWA students and alumnae. Coach Schiller is a history teacher and tennis coach (as well as a published author); Coach Phillips coached the Freshman team last year; and Britni Villareal served as Varsity coach in 2016-2017 and also coaches Houston-area club teams.
Athletic Director Rick Perez looks forward to the season. "My goal as the AD is to see this team thrive and learn new things under new head coach Britni Villarreal. She has the knowledge to get the information across to the players," he says. "Our goal for the freshmen and JV is for them to go out there and improve each day at practice and matches, and for them to be there for each other. Team chemistry is so important in sports."
Coach Perez is one of the team's biggest fans. "Nothing makes me happier than to see those girls give it 120% on that court, diving for balls, making great sets, and hammering that kill (spike) on the other side of the net."
The Falcons' first home game is August 15 versus Cypress Christian, and everyone is invited. JV starts at 5:00 p.m. and Varsity takes the court at 6:00 p.m. Go Falcons!
