Women of the Word Wednesday: Britney Bell ' 22

Britney Bell '22 said it was the Falcon's Nest gym that really sold her on coming to IWA.

"I walked into the gym and I fell in love with IWA!" she said.

Britney was certainly not a stranger to the school; her older sister Ashley graduated in 2015 and went on to Texas A&M University. So, IWA was definitely a front-runner for Britney as a high school choice. And, in the end, it was the right one.

"The teachers here really get to know you," she said, noting that IWA's small size means it's easy for students and teachers to know one another, which means students feel like they matter. "And all the girls are so welcoming."

That welcoming spirit is what led Britney to be one of the Falcon Ambassadors, a group of students who works with the admissions office to host tours and events, and helps the office of marketing and communications with story writing and social media. Britney is on the Falcon Ambassadors Executive Team, and works with other tour guides.

"I love being able to showcase the school," she explained.

During her four years at IWA, Britney's played on the basketball team, spending a lot of time in the gym she loved on that first visit. Last year, she played soccer for the Falcons, and will return to the team this winter. She's also part of the Campus Ministry Team, which takes an active part in all-school Masses and retreats, as well as hosting events such as the annual Advent Reflection Service.

"Planning the sophomore retreat helped me see how to be a leader in my faith," said Britney.

That faith is something she's been able to explore and grow here at IWA. Britney said that the theology class she took with Mrs. Rachael Valka was one of her favorites.

"It was a hard class," she said. "And the discussions about values opened my eyes to new things about Christianity and my faith."

As IWA approaches this year's admissions season, and plans for welcoming eighth grade tours take shape, expect that Britney will be sharing her story with prospective students, helping them see the way faith and sisterhood are lived out daily.
