By offering technology classes, we intentionally encourage students not only to use technology but to understand it.

Incarnate Word Academy is committed to preparing our students for success in an ever-changing world by implementing the latest technology into our educational practices. From iPads in our backpacks to desktops at home and storage in the cloud, technology is everywhere. Advances in technology affect how we live, work, play and most importantly for IWA, how we learn.

Learning with Technology

Here are just a few of the ways that IWA uses technology to better prepare students:

iPad Program

As part of our 1:1 technology program, Incarnate Word Academy provides each student with an iPad during her time at IWA.

This iPad program provides our students with the opportunity to develop the skills, tools and experiences needed to succeed in high school and to better prepare them for college and beyond.

Setup & Distribution

Apple ID

An IWA monitored Apple ID will be assigned to each student.

iPad Distribution

Freshmen & Transfer Students: iPad distribution will take place for new students during Freshman/Transfer Orientation.

Returning Students: iPad distribution will take place for returning students in early August.

iPad Apps

All necessary apps will be available for all students

Students cannot download or purchase any outside applications. Students can download approved applications under the student icon.
Available Apps:
- The full Google suite
- The full Adobe Creative Cloud Suite
- All Microsoft 365 products
- Notability
- And many other apps!

Textbooks

The majority of classes offer digital textbooks, or they give the option of buying digital or print textbooks. For the current book list and more information on purchasing digital books, click here. Teachers will walk students through the installation of textbooks and course materials during the first week of classes.

Usage & Guidelines

iPad Ownership & Monitoring

While a student is at IWA, IWA owns the iPad. Upon graduation and only upon graduation, the student will have the opportunity to purchase their iPad at its current value.
All social media apps, messaging apps and VPNs are disabled.
- The iPad is expected to be used as a tool to facilitate learning.
Students are expected to charge their iPad every night so that when she arrives at school the next day, she is ready to begin learning.
Student will use their iPad daily for note-taking, textbooks, homework and test-taking.

Care of Device

Students are expected to:

Keep the iPad in working condition with a full charge each morning.
Establish and maintain a confidential password.
Secure the iPad in an IWA-approved case, ensuring protection to the screen and four corners.
Clean the screen with a soft, dry, anti-static cloth or with a screen cleaner designed specifically for LCD-type screens. Do not use paper towels, which may scratch the screen.
Keep the iPad clean with no writing or stickers on the device.
Update apps and the operating system regularly.

Certain preference settings, such as screen brightness and notifications, may be changed by a student. Any customization must be in good taste and in alignment with the rules and values of the school.

Repairs, Loss & Replacement

Lost or Stolen iPads

Students must keep the iPad in a secure location at all times.

A lost or stolen iPad must be reported within 24 hours to Mr. Tim Moudry, Technology Director, by filling out a claim form, available from the Technology Director, including a parent/guardian signature. If a copy of a police report of a stolen iPad is provided to IWA, the responsible party will be billed $150 for a replacement iPad. If an iPad is lost or no police report is filed, the responsible party will be billed the total cost of the iPad replacement.

Damaged or Destroyed iPads

Damaged or destroyed iPads must be reported to the Technology Director, Mr. Tim Moudry, within 24 hours by filling out a claim form including a parent/guardian signature.

For the first instance of damage, such as a broken or cracked screen, the responsible party will be billed $75. For the second instance, the responsible party will be billed $125. For the third instance, the responsible party will be billed $175.

The records for breakage transcend years and are not reset each school year. If the damage is a result of the student having removed the approved protective case or due to gross negligence or malicious intent, the full charge for repair or replacement will be billed to the responsible party.

The student is responsible for notifying the Technology Director within five school days if the repair is insufficient or ineffective to allow the school to utilize the repair warranty. Non-reported damaged iPads or iPads with damaged cases will be confiscated.

If the iPad itself or case is defective or has problems, there will be no charge to fix.

Loaned iPads

If the student’s device or case is temporarily unusable or broken, IWA will have a limited number of iPads that may be checked out from the Technology Director. If a student’s iPad is sent for repair, the loaned iPad may be used for the length of the repair. Students must pick up their repaired iPad within two school days of notification of completed repairs. Notifications will be sent to the student by email.

Return of iPad

At the end of the school year, graduating seniors, non-registered students, or students with tuition balances will be required to return the iPad, original iPad cable and original power adapter in good working order to the school and all personal data must be deleted. This process requires the student to have disabled Find My iPad and any parental restrictions set on the device. If the iPad is not returned as required, the full replacement cost will be billed.

They make use of a variety of interactive softwares, including SmartNotebook to aid instruction, GoogleClassroom for collaboration and Socrative for assessments. Technology at IWA is a cross-curricular endeavor. Students use coding expertise to create websites for end-of-year projects, use Adobe Creative Cloud to create digital art for Falcon Theatre events and even embark on prototype-making using a 3-D printer.
